Flash floods hit Kapit, poor drainage blamed

The multipurpose hall of Kapit Foochow Association was among the places inundated during yesterday’s heavy rainfall.
KAPIT: Torrential rain lasting two hours yesterday morning triggered flooding in several parts of Kapit town.
The sudden surge of water left some areas under about a foot of water and made many roads impassable to vehicles.
Among the affected areas were the carpark beneath Mega Mall between Jalan Yong
Mok Chai and Jalan Penghulu Nyanggau as well as Jalan Selirik.
A car owner whose vehicle was among those at Mega Mall blamed the flooding on poor drainage in the surrounding area.
“The water that came out from the drains left the whole area smelling foul and made the ground muddy and slippery.
“I hope the local council arranges to have the mud removed,” he said.
Jalan Selirik, meanwhile, is prone to flooding each time there is heavy rain, with water overflowing from the drains onto the road and into nearby houses and other low-lying areas.
A contributing factor is the poor drainage – some of which are clogged by debris and others by siltation which prevents the smooth discharge of water.

Water from nearby drains flooded the carpark beneath Mega Mall.

My comments:
Though this flood disaster happened about a month plus ago but i believe it will happen again if the problems of drainage at the said area and the reservoirs along the way where the water deluges from the dams upstream nearby have not been resolved properly.
