What is Referendum law? Lina Soo

What is Referendum law?
I could never understand the obsession abt the Referendum law thingy. A referendum which is a voting process (to vote Yes or No on specific issue of national interest) is under the jurisdiction of the election commission SPR which is the federal body empowered to register voters and hold elections. Referendum law would hv to b federal law and enacted in the federal government. If you want referendum law, then it is for MPs to bring before Parliament.

However, the State is empowered to call for and hold Inquiry for State purpose under State List II (10) of the IGC Report. This is the avenue available to Sarawak if Sarawak wants to gather public opinion on a matter affecting Sarawakians.
The Sarawak government can carry out this process if it wants, any time if endorsed by the Sarawak Cabinet (this excludes assistant ministers who are not part of cabinet). There is nothing to stop the Sarawak government from holding an Inquiry under State List to discover if the people want autonomy or independence. But the current Sarawak government will not dare to do it.
When we make demands, we hv to know what are the correct and relevant constitutional processes. No use to demand what is not doable constitutionally.

I stand corrected if anyone disagrees. 😀
Note: you don’t need a referendum to exit, Singapore did not hold a referendum to leave Malaysia in 1965. Even if there is no referendum law, Parliament can still legislate to hold an election not necessarily to choose the govt, but to have a referendum ie voting process to vote on a matter of national interest.

My comments:
With this awareness, in 2021, we people should know which representatives to elect to represent us to vote Sarawak out of the federation of Malaysia which stands for nothing but plundering, exploitation, oppression, suppression, robbery and bullying.
