KGBS supports initiative to appoint teaching assistants

SIBU: Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) fully supports the Education Ministry’s intention to lighten teachers’ burden by taking into consideration the appointment of teaching assistants.

KGBS president Ahmad Malie called for the speedy implementation of the initiative as the issue of teachers’ workload had long been discussed without any clear resolution.

“Until now, there has been no concrete action. The issue was first raised over 10 years ago and it is strange that it is still unresolved,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

KGBS hoped that newly-minted Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid could resolve the issue soon, Ahmad added.

He explained that a pilot study on this issue had also been conducted in Melaka and Kedah.

“KGBS is not interested to see this issue become rhetoric with various researches carried out without any concrete action.”

Bernama recently reported Mahdzir as saying that the
eighth National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS) that focused on addressing teachers’ administrative workload through the repositioning of teachers’ core duties initiatives would be expanded nationwide.

Under the initiative, teaching assistants comprising administrative assistant (administration/operation) Grade N17 (PT N17) and computer technician Grade FT17 (JK FT17) would be placed in schools to
lessen administration and operation, as well as special assignment ICT teachers’ technical workload of data teachers, media and library teachers and smart coordinator teachers.

My comments:
I think KGBS president Ahmad Malie should be more aggressive and pushy, to set the dateline and deadline for the implementation of teaching assistants to relieve teachers of their workload.   Otherwise, I am afraid, there is another ten years or more to wait and talk about the issue.

There is no need of anymore research.  Having teaching assistants, is for sure, will relieve the heavy workload of teachers especially teachers teaching languages in classes having more than 40 students in a class.
