Roofed multipurpose hall built via gotong royong
The new hall where the SK Nanga Jagau school community holds its activities.
KANOWIT: The rural school community of SK Nanga Jagau has built a new roofed multipurpose hall for the school on a limited budget via ‘gotong royong’.
Ngemah assemblyman Alexander Vincent said if the project was built on contract basis, it would be costly.
“However they managed to build a proper place for the school assembly and other activities using RM20,000 from my Minor Rural Project allocation,” he said when officiating at the opening of the hall at the school in Sungai Ngemah here on Wednesday.
Alexander who is also Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Supreme Council member noted the hardship the school community went through to build the hall due to its location.
SK Nanga Jagau is the remotest school in Ngemah state constituency serving 24 longhouses at Nanga Jagau Resettlement Scheme and several other longhouses in the upriver area of Sungai Ngemah.
Alexander said the pupils, parents and teachers of the school should be proud of their effort.
“The hall may not be as beautiful as those in other schools but the structure is standing strong here today because you built it,” he said.
He urged teachers and parents to continue cooperating.
SK Nanga Jagau headmaster Dawie Jamau said it took nine days for parents and teachers to construct the wooden hall which is where pupils and teachers gather for school activities.
Present at the function were assistant Kanowit District Education officer Berita Sabang, Penghulu Barnabas Angkis, Penghulu Ambrose Pengiran Sampai and Penghulu Ijam Tuah.
Alexander also announced RM30,000 to buy plywood and building materials for the hall.

Exactly! Do what you can to improve your area in
gotong-royong ways and of course ask the representative of your area to pay for
all the expenses as he is given RM1million for MRP/Minor Rural Project
annually. If not enough, it is also your
right to ask for more allocation. Don’t wait
assly. Always set the deadline and dateline
for any project to improve the infrastructure of your area. Remember nobody will help you automatically.
You
should take the initiative and chart your own course. Yes, people must stay united if you want a
better deal. Demand to be given the
projects that you can do on your own.
It
is time to reject the few favoured companies to monopolise the projects and
plunder and exploit at will.
